Ram's Open Season Friday Night Against Bethune-Cookman


The Rams will open up the 2009-10 campaign on Friday, when they host the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University. Game time at the Stuart C. Siegel Center is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Rams are coming off an impressive 85-55 victory over Division II Virginia Union University in the annual Downtown Showdown. VCU's new fast paced style of play forced 21 turnovers. Junior Larry Sanders led the way with 22 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks.

VCU returns four of five starters from last year's 24-10 team that won the CAA title for the second time in the last three years. Friday's season opener also marks Shaka Smart's first game as VCU head coach.

The 2008-2009 season was a record-breaker for the Bethune-Cookman program winning the most games in it's Division I history and the first winning season in Division I for the Wildcats. B-CU was 17-16 overall, and tied for the third in the MEAC last season.

The Wildcats are lead by sophomore C. J. Reed, who led the team in scoring, assists, minutes played and earned the MEAC Rookie of the Year and also All-MEAC second team honors. He also the son of B-CU's head coach Clifford Reed, Jr. Coach Cliff Reed is in his seventh season as B-CU head coach and his twelfth season in the Wildcat program.
